SKIRMISH WIN ROUSSEAU S/D
The opening skirmish involving the “Rousseau Subdivision” developers verses the Bayou Paquet and neighboring community residents occurred last evening. The developer’s two petitions to rezone 52-acres from A-2 to A-4 and then add a PUD overlay were unanimously defeated at the Planning and Zoning level. The commissioners rightfully shared staff concerns that the requested rezoning and planned development would create issues with drainage, traffic, and safety for the surrounding community.
The Council Chambers was packed, allowing standing-room-only. Approximately 200- residents who opposed the rezoning petitions made their selective voices heard. Approximately 60 or 70 residents had to remain outside, but they effectively expressed their opposition.
Remember, this simply represents the initial scuffle. It’s anticipated that the developers may revise their plot-plan and/or appeal directly to the parish council using the project’s current format. As set by law, they must submit an appeal to the Parish Council within 10 days. The concerned residents present last night seem well prepared for this next phase.
Sadly, the Rousseau Subdivision is only one of three proposed developments planned for this area. All three are petitioning for rezoning to accommodate unreasonably dense housing plans. There may be additional unidentified developments in the pipeline, of which we are unaware.
