ST. TAMMANY PARISH DEVELOPMENT

You now know that at its March 4, 2021 meeting the Parish Council unanimously upheld our appeal to overturn the "Bayou Bend” rezoning petitions. Nevertheless, defeating the rezoning does not prevent the owner from developing the parcel under its A-3 zoning. Subsequent to the defeat, the developer’s attorney clearly expressed their intent to revise the plans under the existing A-3 zoning and resubmit it to the Parish for approval.

The BLA Board will continue to monitor future development of this tract as it proceeds through the Parish Planning process. We will keep you informed as significant items arise. To that end, we call attention to a recent article published in the Advocate. See the link below:

Under its A-3 designation, the 47+ acre property on Carroll Road may still be inappropriately developed. Considering the sensitivity of the area and the potential adverse effects on the community’s nearby residents and property owners, we have shared concerns regarding:

  1. Increased flooding to the entire Bayou Liberty community and watershed

  2. Enhanced traffic on a dangerously congested Carroll Road and to its interconnected arteries.

  3. Adverse impacts from run-off and sewage treatment effluent to surrounding properties and specifically to the sensitive and over-burdened Bayou Liberty

Our appeal efforts received resounding commendation from the Parish Council and related parish officials. Without appearing emotional we meticulously presented our case using corroborating evidence when necessary. This undertaking included concerns from not only BLA members, but also from community members and groups. The issues raised in the article, although specific to our area, apply equally to other sensitive regions throughout St. Tammany. The “Old Way” of developing properties in St. Tammany can no longer be sustained - the delicate nature of our ecosystems must be protected and maintained for future generations.
